| December is usually a time for holiday celebration. Classes
end, students go home, and everyone is given the opportunity to relax. Yet,
the members of the Richard L. Hansford Chapter of National Residence Hall
Honorary used the month of December to work on a program with two other
residence hall groups, spend and entire day making holiday crafts, and
perform several acts of recognition. The month began with several
recognitions, starting on December 3rd. One NRHH member recognized the
Residence Hall Council Student Action Team Director for all of his work with
the RHC holiday sweatshirt sale. The SAT director volunteered a lot of his
time to sit at a table in the cafeteria and sell sweatshirts then he helped
to organize and distribute the shirts as well. The student assistants in
Residence Life and Housing were recognized for all of their help with the
sweatshirt sale as well. They were presented with a tin of cookies on
December 12th. On December 15th, NRHH recognized Todd Lonzrick for his work
with the RHC sweatshirt sale as well. Mr. Lonzrick coordinated a payment
program for the sweatshirt sales that allowed students to use the money on
their student ID cards to order the sweatshirts for their parents. He was
presented with a mug filled with various hot beverage items. On December
18th, NRHH recognized the former Director of Residence Life and Housing at
The University of Akron, Dr. David Stephen. He was given a student designed
NRHH sweatshirt and t-shirt in recognition of his contributions to the
chapter both while he was on campus and after he left. On December 19th, two
separate recognitions took place. First, an NRHH member recognized the
chapter’s namesake, Dean Richard L. Hansford and his wife Barbara. In
recognition of their contributions to the chapter itself as well as
Residence Life and Housing, NRHH presented the Hansford’s with a gift basket
of coffee, cocoa, cookies, and candy. Later that day, another member of NRHH
presented the 5th Grade Teachers at St. Augustine Elementary School with a
school themed gift bag. The two 5th Grade teachers work closely with NRHH to
plan and implement the Adopt-A-School program, and NRHH wanted to thank them
for all their work during the fall semester. Adopt-A-School was a big part
of December for NRHH. On December 17th, four students returned to campus
after the beginning of winter break and spent an entire day at the
elementary school helping the 5th Grade students make holiday crafts for
their families. They helped them paint, create tin-punch designs, draw
Christmas cards, design picture frames, and otherwise facilitated various
crafts. It was a wonderful end to the semester for the program. NRHH also
co-sponsored an event with two other residence hall groups, Residence Hall
Council and Residence Hall Program Board. The three groups presented the
Pancake Study Break on Monday December 8th. This study break allows
residence hall students the opportunity to relax from studying and
socialize. NRHH members helped serve pancakes, waffles, sausage, and various
toppings, as well as stayed for clean up. This year, every NRHH member
signed up to volunteer for at least two hours of service during this
program, even in the beginning of a very busy finals week. Thus, the month
of December was a busy one for the Richard L. Hansford Chapter of National
Residence Hall Honorary. Even though the students were off campus for the
second half of the month, they still accomplished a lot of activities in a
short amount of time and deserve to be considered for the NRHH Chapter of
the Month award.
