History of the Chemistry Club

The Chemistry Club was founded in 1974 by Scott Sandholm and Barb Benson.  At the time, there were no science clubs - just the math club.  The main purposes of the Chemistry Club were to allow students to get ACS journals at the student affiliate price and to provide a study forum.   Meeting information was written on the upper right-hand corner of chalkboards throughout MS, and to encourage membership, there were no dues that first year.  The favorite activity of many members was the faculty/student softball game, held in a field where ECC and the old bookstore now sit.  They never did keep score.

While an undergrad at St. Cloud State, Scott Sandholm was a math tutor, a member of the Aero Club and a Residential Advisor for 2 ½ years, working in Stearns Hall and Holes Hall.  He majored in chemistry and mathematics under the guidance of his advisor, Dr. Carpenter, and graduated in 1976.  He attended Michigan State and earned his PhD in physical chemistry in 1982.  Scott Sandholm has devoted his life to the study of atmospheric chemistry and on October 10, 2005, he came back to St. Cloud State to give a seminar talk.  Click here to read Sasha Marine’s interview with him.

Information about Barb Benson to be added soon.
