CJA on Facebook.com

The Criminal Justice Association is a recognized student, social and networking club.  It was established in 1974 by Dr. Prout and CJS majors.  Throughout the years, CJA has been active in the community by volunteering, fundraising, and supporting past, present, and future professionals in the criminal justice system.  Not all members are CJ majors however; some are minors and some are just persons interested in criminal justice.  Just recently, CJA became involved with and supported the Tri-County Crime Stoppers.  They are a non-profit organization like CJA, and provide cash rewards for persons that provide information leading to the arrest of individuals involved in recent crimes.

"If one desires a career in criminal justice, one must ask these questions: Do I love the Constitution? Do I believe in the Bill of Rights? Do I truly believe in the sanctity and natural right of due process?  If the individual views these as impediments, nuisances, or irrelevant, then that person should not be a public servant (Pollock, 2007)."

To all (potential) CJ majors,

Are you interested in becoming a Member of CJA or don’t know how?  It is simple.  If you would like to be involved with CJA you have two options.  One option is to become a Member.  In order to become a Member, all you need to do is to pay (donate) the membership dues which is $15 per semester, and accumulate 75% of the total points possible per semester.  Dues pay for guest speakers, the career fair, national conferences, trips to prisons, tours, the annual banquet, and general operating fees.  As a Member, you are entitled to vote during business meetings on the different issues at hand and you are also entitled to participate in the social events which are paid for by the Association.

A second option is to just be an Associate Member.  An Associate Member is not entitled to vote and not have the social events paid for by Association funds, but is able to still attend the social, meetings and speakers.

Why should you become a Member of CJA?  As a Member, you will have opportunities to listen and ask questions from guest speakers who hold positions in the Criminal Justice field.  They offer useful information about the different agencies in the field as well as important job application and interview techniques.  Every year, CJA and MCA sponsor the Criminal Justice career fair on campus.  You will also be given opportunities to be involved in community services which can be applied to a co-curricular transcript along with your membership to the Criminal Justice Association.  It is also another way to develop a network to make job hunting after graduation easier.  Finally, Membership will allow you to be nominated for an officer position at the end of the year so you can continue fulfilling the goals of CJA in the future.

Sincerely,

Michael D. Gunderson

CJA President
