Icebox Classic Speech & Debate Tournament

February 6-7, 2009

Dear Friends:

Saint Cloud State University Forensics, the MN Omicron Chapter of Pi Kappa Delta, and the SCSU Department of Communication Studies are pleased to invite you and your team to the Icebox Classic Speech & Debate Tournament on Friday and Saturday, February 6-7, 2009.

The tournament will offer 2 rounds of individual events with finals (semi-finals as necessary) in all eleven AFA individual events with an added opportunity to perform in our two nuance events, Interpretation of Children’s Literature and Discussion.  Students may not participate in both Extemporaneous Speaking and Discussion in Flight B due to time constraints.  As per tradition at our tournament, impromptu speaking will use quotations, cartoons, and objects for topic stimuli.  We will also offer four rounds of parliamentary debate (NPDA sanctioned) and out-rounds as entries warrant (4/2).  Debaters will be able to participate in all individual event patterns.  Awards will be presented to all finalists (including two awards for debate teams), as well as to the top five in quadrathlon, debate speakers, and team sweepstakes winners.  We will also recognize the top novice competitor in each event.

Again this year, we have rented out the SCSU Recreation Center (Atwood Memorial Center, first floor) for the TOURNAMENT PARTY!  Bowling, pool, and table tennis will be available at no charge to tournament participants, judges, and coaches from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. in the basement of the Atwood Memorial Center.  We ask that all individuals wishing to join us for some after-hours fun bring along an ID.  Our schedule should allow for a healthier competition weekend, the time to join us for the tournament party, and should allow you the chance to be back on the road a little earlier than usual.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will get you the information you need.  We hope to see you in February!

For the team,

Entries

Each student may enter two individual events per flight.  Students may also compete in Parliamentary debate; there are no limitations on parliamentary debaters’ participation in individual events.  Although there is no limit on entries per school, please see “judging” below.  All events will follow AFA rules with the exception of the Interpretation of Children’s Literature and Discussion described below.

Children’s Literature: an original interpretation of literature that was written primarily for the enjoyment of children.  A single cutting or a compilation is allowed.  Performers are encouraged to interpret a children’s play.  Be wild and crazy!  Be bouncy!  The focus should be on verbal and physical performance rather than on internalized or stylized interpretation techniques.  Perform like child play and enjoy—with reckless abandon.  Manuscripts are optional.  Time limit is eight minutes including introduction and transitions.

Discussion (impromptu-style): an event which encourages a small group of individuals to work together to reach a solution to a problem through sharing common knowledge and opinions.  This event seeks consensus rather than majority rule. The focus should be the encouragement of cooperation and critical thinking to arrive at a collective goal of better understanding and problem solving.

The Discussion group shall be composed of not more than seven contestants. The Discussion activity shall be conducted according to the following procedure:

  • The discussion will be problem/solution-oriented; a new problem area will be furnished by the host school for each round.  Students should use common knowledge for the discussion.
  • The discussants should control their own process of inquiry. Emerging leadership from within the group should develop. Management of time for that round should remain the responsibility of the discussants themselves. Judges are not to participate. Judges should not suggest an agenda, give an opinion, or give oral critiques.

The basis for judging should place emphasis on the task and social dimensions of group interaction. These questions may serve as a guide for judging this event:

1. Did the discussant's contributions add to the group effort?
2. Did the discussant's contributions reflect an understanding of major issues?
3. Did the discussant's behavior reflect a respect for the worth of other participants?
4. Did the discussant exhibit active listening skills?

Judge(s) may write a group critique sheet to be duplicated for each member of the Discussion group.

THE DISCUSSION PERIOD SHALL NOT EXCEED 45 MINUTES.  Students should participate in Discussion before proceeding to their other event in Flight B.  Students cannot participate in both Extemp and Discussion.

Extemporaneous Speaking: The use of laptop computers will be allowed in Extemp Preparation for file retrieval only.  Access to external online sources is strictly prohibited.  No other electronic devices will be permitted for extemporaneous speaking.  SCSU takes no responsibility for securing personal belongings during the tournament.  Students cannot participate in both Extemp and Discussion.

Parliamentary Debate:  NPDA rules will govern debate.  In addition to flow paper, students will be allowed to bring a dictionary into the debate chamber.  There will be no warm room.  Coaching during preparation time is strongly discouraged.  While many SCSU students will be helping to run the tournament, some students may participate in debate.  SCSU students are not eligible to advance to elimination rounds.

Judging

One judge will be able to cover six individual events and two debate teams.  In the case of large covered entries, we reserve the right to move students so that judges may fulfill their judging obligation.

Awards

Trophies will be awarded to the top six contestants in each event.  If an event has fewer than twelve contestants awards will be presented to the top fifty percent of the competitors.  Debate awards will include trophies for the top five speakers and for out-rounds as appropriate.  Team sweeps will be awarded to the top five schools.  Team sweepstakes will be awarded on a combination of preliminary and final round points accumulated in both debate and individual events.

Preliminary rounds (IE)                           1st = 3 points, 2nd = 2 points, 3rd = 1 point

Preliminary rounds (Debate Team)          W = 3 points, L = 1 point

Final rounds (IE)                                    1st = 12 points, 2nd = 10 points, etc., SF loss = 1 pt.

Finals rounds (Debate Team)                 W = 24 points, L = 12 points, SF loss = 2 points

Quadrathlon

Trophies will be awarded to the top four quadrathlon contestants.  To be eligible for quadrathlon a student must be entered in at least four events including one interpretation and one public speaking/limited preparation event.  The top four events will be counted.  Debate points for each student will be halved for quadrathlon tabulation.  Debate will be included in both the individual and team sweeps computations.

Fees

Fees will be assessed at 5:00 PM on Wednesday, February 4, 2009.

·         Each IE slot will be assessed at $6.00.
