In Other News...

IT'S AN ASH WEDNESDAY TRIPLE PLAY! With the beginning of Lent on Feb. 17, we'll offer both a noon and 5:30 pm Mass, along with our 9 pm student Mass. As always, we've lined up a Triple Play for the evening...so after the 5:30 pm Mass, plan to come on down to the Terrace to enjoy a simple meal of soup and bread at 6:30 pm, and a speaker at 7 pm. This year, we are proud to feature Charles Bobertz, professor at St. John's University School of Theology. Bobertz's talk, "How Catholics Read the Bible," will examine the resurgence of biblical literalism in both Catholic and Evangelical Protestant communities, exploring what is at stake theologically and socially in how we read and interpret the Bible. This night promises to keep us thinking...don't miss it! The meal and the speaker are free. Co-sponsored by the Community and Prayer & Spirituality Focus groups.

Long Range Planning (LRP) Update
On Tuesday, January 19 from 6:30 - 9 pm in the Terrace an all-parish meeting was held regarding visioning for the future of Newman. It was a very producctive and encouraging meeting with lots of suggestions and affirmations on the work that has been done so far. We've had a small group of dedicated individuals working hard on the long range planning process (remember that questionnaire we filled out last spring?).

Faculty and Staff Luncheon
Any current or retired staff or faculty of SCSU or SCTC are cordially invited to join the Newman staff for lunch in Atwood on Wed. Feb. 24 at noon, room location TBA. Newman member Lin Holder, Professor Emerita from the Department of Theatre, Film and Dance, and former Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, will be leading us in discussing the role of creativity and the arts in the human relationship with God. Her talk is called, "Aesthetic versus Anaesthetic Faith in a Secular World." Please come having read the creation stories from Genesis as well as Psalm 8, and be ready for an engaging, insightful conversation!
